Delivery of Anticoagulant Clinics in Primary Care

The course is designed to allow practitioners to meet the practice competencies required to undertake monitoring and management of oral anticoagulation therapy in adult patients.

 

This course will equip individual practitioners with knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to effectively and safely monitor and manage oral, vitamin k antagonist anticoagulation therapy in adult patients. The course does not cover in detail the setting up of clinics or use of computer aided decision-making software but does signpost to further sources for both these areas. This course will appeal to Primary Care Health Professionals – qualified providers across primary care (General Practices and Pharmacies).

 

The two-day course will include:

 

Biomedical Science                               The clotting process and how laboratory testing measures it Practical training in near patient testing

 

Applied Anatomy and Physiology           Indications for anticoagulation

Contraindications and management of special circumstances

 

Anticoagulation Pharmacology              Actions and interactions of anticoagulants

Side effects and their management

 

Care Delivery                                       Local and national guidelines and protocols Support of clients with specific needs Dosing workshop
